Sara De Bosschere performs her interpretation of Sarah Kane’s 4.48 not as a letter of farewell, but as an authentic account of the space between swimming and sinking.

4.48 is not only a strong play, but also an authentic, precise, moving attempt to describe certain processes that take place within the largely invisible area between the conscious and the subconscious, between loneliness and dialogue, between love and aggression, between paddling and perishing.

"The text of 4.48 is completely wrongly read as a suicide note," says De Bosschere. "The fact that the author took her own life after writing it cast a shadow over the interpretation of this text. I feel the need to strongly oppose this reading. Recently, I found an interview with her brother that deeply moved me. He confirms the necessity I feel to refute this fatalistic interpretation. No one is capable of knowing which feeling leads to which word and which word to which action."

"Sarah wanted to make it clear that psychological suffering may be pathological but is not therefore illogical." – Simon Kane (Sarah Kane’s brother)
