In 1982 Argentina and the United Kingdom fought the Falklands War. The battle ended in victory for the British army and claimed about a thousand lives on both sides. Although the conflict took place decades ago, the islands’ governance is still a matter of discussion. Theatre of War brings the story of six veterans from the Falklands War, who create a film together. Nearly 35 years after the conflict three British and three Argentine veterans spend months together, recalling war memories and rehearsing a re-enactment.
Lola Arias with this film offers the audience an inside view of the artistic creation of this social experiment with former war enemies: auditions to find protagonists, the first meetings and discussions, the theatrical reproduction of their memories in various scenarios, a swimming pool, a building site, a military division, … Each scene is at the same time authentic and artificial. Sometimes it seems like things happen for the first time, sometimes the situation appears premeditated.
KVS city dramaturge Gerardo Salinas spoke with Lola Arias about the documentary and these challenging times. You can watch the interview on KVS 24/7.
