An older acting couple – played by real life couple Els Dottermans and Han Kerckhoffs – take stock of their love for each other and for their métier. To capitalise on their fame and make some money, they tour popular classics, including one about a drunken, vituperative intellectual couple. After a while, that’s the only show the audience still wants to see – all the others flop, but this show remains sold out. Evening after evening they are condemned to face each other in an ever-decreasing performance. 

The only thing that changes is who their antagonists are: two younger actors are in the show, but couple after couple leave, slamming doors on the way out. Happily, the State is on hand to offer support: a subsidy is on offer, as long as the next chosen pair of young actors are “diverse.” 

The first meeting between the two couples exposes a whole lot of hidden conflict to the light.
