The dominating discourse is one that promotes coming out of the closet as the desired goal for LGTBQI individuals, to the exclusion of those, who through a courageous act themselves, do not come out. Their life is not framed by the reality of a closet, instead they use other cultural frameworks to construct their queer reality.
Coming out to friends, not family; sisters, not brothers; yelling it in the streets of Brussels, but never in Beirut; telling no one and telling all; each approach is influenced by space and time, and each approach is deeply courageous.
For SLOW#05 we will engage with what it means to have courage, make art and live a queer existence. We will work with artists that are diverse in regard to gender, sexual orientation, and backgrounds. While some of the artists have come out to their family/friends or society in general, others have not. We intend to share their stories - what drove them to come out publicly, or the reasons for reluctance – during an evening filled with slam, poetry and theatrical interpretations.
SLOW – Slam Our World – combines urban word art with theatre. For each SLOW-session, we welcome a different international guest. This SLOW will be in collaboration with Haven for Artists based in Beirut, Lebanon under the direction of Dayna Ash, involving European based artists as well as local Belgian based individuals and organizations.
The pandemic reshaped this international project into a digital format. In September we will be launching SLOW#05: Queer Courage online. Stay tuned!
