UMUKO

The umuko is a red-flowering tree, guardian of stories with healing powers. With five young Rwandan artists, dancers, a poet, and musicians, Dorothée Munyaneza celebrates the creativity, daring, and freedom of a new generation that continues the memories of the past while dreaming of the future.

Dorothée Munyaneza brings five young artists from Rwanda together on stage. ‘Brand-new elders’, to use the words of Kae Tempest: men and women who dream of the Rwanda of tomorrow, without forgetting any of its history. Together, they conjure up an umeko, the tree that brightened up Dorothée’s childhood with its bright-red flowers. Gathered around the umeko, they try to make connections between what has been preserved, what remains upstanding among the rubble, and what is still to come.

In search of love, solidarity and joy, this creation combines dance, poetry, music and song, all thanks to the vulnerable, powerful, rebellious youngsters on stage.
