Nobody flees for fun. This is the true story of Ali Abdi Omar. He has only one way to escape terror in his home country of Somalia: a trek though the deadly migration route in the Horn of Africa, to the heart of Europe. After two years, Ali arrives at Brussels Midi station. It’s 2019. He is fourteen.

Director Ricard Soler Mallol, known for his intercultural and interdisciplinary approach, and percussionist and multi-media artist Grey Filastine adapt Ali’s migration – a story illustrative of so many who crossed continents and cultures driven by despair – into a relevant opera project for three singers, six dancers, an actor and eleven musicians. The libretto was written together with the story’s protagonist, while the composition includes electronic music, voices and analogue synthesizers as well as orchestral brass, wind and percussion instruments to recreate the soundscape of Ali’s hellish journey.

A creation by La Monnaie with support from the enoa network.
