Phaedra, wife of Athenian king Theseus, has had it. She is tired of hiding her desires, tired of playing the beloved queen and of living in the shadow of her husband.

The doesn’t feel at home anywhere and feels like a jewel, only used as decoration for her husband. She is stuck between the indestructible walls of her palace. The appearance of Persea, a young bride-to-be, upsets the precarious balance ... Phaedra seems to enter a new labyrinth, waking from a long, deep sleep. She becomes ever bolder and remembers someone she had long forgotten: herself. Phaedra’s search for happiness becomes a murder weapon in the hands of the power- hungry religious and political leaders ...

Nino Haratischwili presents a contemporary interpretation of the Greek myth, which interweaves human freedom and societal norms with political and religious intrigue.

Phaedra in Flames

Nino Haratischwili (1983, Tbilisi) is an author, playwright, and director. She is at home in two languages and has been writing in both German and Georgian since she was twelve. Her grand family epic The Eighth Life (for Brilka) has been published in 25 languages and was overloaded with important literary prizes. Her novel The Cat and the General made the shortlist of the Deutscher Buchpreis. She studied film direction in Tbilisi and theatre direction in Hamburg, and has written about 20 plays to date.

KVS and europalia georgia bring her theatrical works to Belgium for the first time. Phaedra in Flames, her most recent creation, premiered in autumn of 2022 at the Royal District Theatre in Tbilisi and has since also been staged in Germany by the Berliner Ensemble, directed by Nanouk Leopold. We present the original version as written and directed by Haratischwili, featuring Georgian actors. Phaedra in Flames is the first part of a trilogy about strong women in mythology.
