A hard-hitting docu-performance about the wars and atrocities that never make the news, the hazy line between fact and fiction and the manipulative powers of our leaders and the economy. Veerle van Overloop’s What Lies Beneath calls out the destructive power of today’s limited and simplistic media messaging. Its blend of text, unpolished dance, insistent soundscape, live graffiti and video art will get right under your skin.

What Lies Beneath is inspired by the work of British documentary-maker Adam Curtis as well as the published work of journalists Robert Fisk and John Pilger. Van Overloop believes that, just like investigative journalism, theatre has a duty to expose stories that would otherwise escape our notice.

Veerle van Overloop works here with talented young artists including the Australian dancer Olympia Kotopoulos, the versatile Glaswegian artist Robbie Thomson, the graphic artist Jelle Valk (who is part of the Groningen-based collective WERC) and the actress Nadège Ouedraogo from Burkina Faso. Text is by British writer and former BBC correspondent Lara Pawson.
