The European research project OPPORTUNITIES brings 4 years of research to the stage. It is an investigation into how to bring the voices of migrants on an equal level so that a society can emerge where everyone can live the life they desire. It is about 4 years of research of how narratives develop, how (social) media spread narratives, how Europeans relate to migration, and how in practice an equal dialogue is possible. 6 European and 3 African countries took up the challenge in a constructive dialogue. Today we engage with you, with the results.

Marjan Temmerman, journalist at VRT, welcomes you and ensures an interactive dialogue.

MORNING SESSION: 9:30 AM

Round Table 1 Voices about and from migrants.

Where do we hear what voices and how do these stories develop and how can they become equal? Roy Sommer and Caro Gebauer (Wuppertal University) and Marco Caracciolo (Ghent University) introduce the key concepts.

Round table 2 What is the power of (social) media in creating stories about and from migrants? And how do Europeans evaluate these stories?

Leen d’Haenens (KULeuven), Silke Goubin (KULeuven, HIVA), Simona Adinolfi (Ghent University), and Birgit Bahtiç-Kunrath (IFZ Austria) discuss the role of media.

Round table 3 What is the voice of Africa within European stories and the European research project?

Aly Tandian (Université de Saint-Louis, Senegal), Mary B. Setrana (University of Ghana) and Mariam Nazze Muwanga (University of Wuppertal) tell us about the voices of Africa and the African diaspora.

Round table 4 What can culture do with migrants’ stories?

Michael De Cock (KVS Brussels), Silvia Ghilas (Literary Adviser, Romania), Cinzia Brentari (CNCA Italy) show how culture can have an impact.
