Lisbeth Gruwez
Lisbeth Gruwez is dancer, choreographer and one of the KVS faces.
Lisbeth Gruwez studied at the Stedelijk Instituut voor Ballet and at P.A.R.T.S., and started her professional career with Ultima Vez in The Day of Heaven and Hell, a project on Pasolini. As from 1999 she worked with Jan Fabre on the productions As long as the world needs a warrior’s soul, Je suis sang and the celebrated solo Quando l’uomo principale è una donna. She is one of Fabre’s ‘warriors of beauty’ and can be seen in the film of that name by Pierre Coulibeuf. She has also worked with Jan Lauwers, Grace Ellen Barkey, Riina Saastamoinen, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Peter Verhelst.
In 2007 she founded the dance company Voetvolk together with the sound artist Maarten Van Cauwenberghe, with whom she had previously cooperated closely in Jan Fabre’s productions. They have already created ten productions together, including It’s going to get worse and worse and worse, my friend, AH/HA, Lisbeth Gruwez dances Bob Dylan, We’re pretty fuckin’ far from okay and The Sea Within – all performed at KVS. Their work is based on the dialogue between dance and sound design, which is always performed live, and the ways they challenge and influence each other.
For KVS creation, Odysseus. Een zwerver komt thuis, she creates an epilogue: the dance solo Penelope, in which she offers a non-verbal answer to the 24-hour stream of words from the Odyssey.
In March 2020 the performance Piano Works Debussy will premiere at KVS. The choreographer enters into a physical duet with pianist Claire Chevallier.
