For its 17th edition, the Festival Lezarts Urbains brings us a programme with a focus on inclusivity, as much in the artistic styles showcased as in the messages and values communicated. Having previously focused exclusively on street dance styles, this year slam and rap make their festival debut; with a programme conceived and designed by the artists from Level Up.
Over the course of a weekend, Lezarts Urbains is joining forces with KVS to bring you a taste of the rich arts landscape emerging from street cultures in Belgium. The festival will showcase a wide range of productions, techniques and dance styles, from short choreography showcases to polished finalized productions, from amateur groups to professional companies. With bonus appearances from rap and slam artists.
This year’s two headline shows will be: BLIND, krumper Hendrickx Ntela’s most recent production – a breathtaking show questioning freedom of thought in today’s society. And UNMUTED, a show by Sisterhood – a collective of Afrodescendent women - that leads us along the pathway trodden by young black women of African descent whose approach aims to deconstruct assigned identities and to associate movement with a reflection anchored in decoloniality.
Also in the programme and totally free of charge*: dance, slam and rap workshops, a seminar on “What is Culture?”, plus workshops open to specific groups on empowerment and cultural appropriation.
*Tickets or passes not required for workshops, but places must be reserved in advance.
Additionally, the Festival Lezarts Urbains will of course give pride of place to battles and freestyle! On the programme: Supreme Cypher, Esprit Session, open stage and DJ sets.
