Should there be a House for African Cultures in Belgium? Why and how?

With 7 percent, sub-Saharan African inhabitants make up an important part of the Brussels population. This is a much higher concentration than registered in the other parts of the country (less than 2 percent). The links between Belgium and the citizens of  the former colonies and protectorates (DRC, Rwanda and Burundi) go back a long way and imply a specific bond between these people and Belgium. Moreover, the migration waves from sub-Saharan Africa since the sixties were accompanied by a lot of artistic and cultural production, which leaves its mark everywhere in the city. Three elements that plead for the arrival of a House for African Cultures in Brussels!

For years, various African communities in Belgium have been working hard to get this project on the rails. The anchoring of such a house in the Brussels Metropolitan District would open many new doors for sub-Saharan-African population groups. It would allow them to participate as citizens in an innovative, creative and committed way.

CONGOLISATION offers the space to think collectively about such an initiative. During the conference, various speakers will talk about the necessity of a House for African Culture and different pistes of development will be held up to the light.
